Frequently asked questions about RECORD

What are some examples of RECORD’s focus areas? 2017-07-11T18:30:35+00:00
RECORD focuses on driving renewable energy research and development towards the government defined targets to achieve a lower carbon economy, examples of this include:
  • Training of wind turbine service technicians through the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) that RECORD was instrumental in establishing.
  • Raising awareness of renewable energy through schools with support to a primary school art competition and a high school science club.
  • Supporting networking events for industry associations (SAWEA, SAPVIA, SASTELLA, SOLTRAIN) to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing between industry and research institutions.
  • Supporting and leveraging support to applied research in the renewable energy sector viz. wind, solar, biomass and ocean (various universities and research groups).
  • Instrumental in the process of mapping renewable energy resources such as wind (WASA), solar (Solar MET), biomass (SAEON) and ocean (CSIR/Eskom).
How does RECORD perform its function? 2017-07-11T18:33:35+00:00

RECORD strives to make contact with all entities in the renewable energy sector in South Africa and then aid in their coordination by avoiding duplication of efforts, building capacity in renewable energy through support to training and knowledge advancement in the sector, providing limited funding for research and development, supporting renewable energy business development and adding to the knowledge base of technologies. RECORD also engages in small-scale renewable awareness raising drives.

Why does RECORD exist? 2017-07-11T18:33:40+00:00

Under the National Energy Act, 2008 (No 34), SANEDI is the mandated organisation to coordinate energy research in South Africa. RECORD, as part of SANRDI exists to support, coordinate and streamline the renewable energy research and development taking place in South Africa.

What is the difference between what SANEDI does and what RECORD does? 2017-07-11T18:33:47+00:00

SANEDI works across the energy sector covering everything except nuclear energy, whereas RECORD focuses on renewable energy. Since RECORD is part of SANEDI, we work towards the identified goals of directing, monitoring and conducting applied energy research and development, demonstration and deployment as well undertaking specific measures to promote the uptake of Green Energy and Energy Efficiency in South Africa.

What does RECORD do? 2017-07-11T18:33:52+00:00

RECORD coordinates and facilitates renewable energy research and development in South Africa. Its main focus is on the larger scale grid connected renewable energy, although often supporting research in other smaller sectors. RECORD encourages cooperation amongst research institutions through the establishment of research clusters in order to avoid duplication and make better use scarce resources.

How does RECORD fit into SANEDI? 2017-07-11T18:33:57+00:00

RECORD is part of the Clean Energy Solutions portfolio within SANEDI.

What is RECORD? 2017-07-11T18:34:01+00:00

RECORD is the Renewable Energy Centre Of Research and Development. RECORD was established in 2011 and became operational in 2012.
